Washington may slap sanctions on Yevtushenkov under CAATSA

WASHINGTON, Aug 8 (PRIME) -- The U.S. Department of State is considering introduction of sanctions on Vladimir Yevtushenkov, the core owner and chairman of the board of directors of Russian multi-industry holding Sistema, according to a letter published by Congresswoman Ileana Ros-Lehtinen late on Tuesday.

Ros-Lethinen previously sent a letter to U.S. Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin and U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo asking them to consider including Yevtushenkov in the U.S. black list under the Countering America’s Adversaries Through Sanctions Act (CAATSA) for his activity and operations of Sistema in the republic of Crimea.

“We are working vigorously to identify all transactions, entities, and individuals that meet the criteria under CAATSA for sanctions. As requested, we will investigate the information you provided about Vladimir Yevtushenkov to determine if he meets the legal requirements for sanctions under CAATSA of the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act,” Department of State’s Assistant Secretary for Legislative Affairs Mary Waters said in a letter responding to Ros-Lethinen.

In June, Sistema’s official representative Sergei Kopytov said that the company had no investment activity in Crimea, and received no requests from the U.S. on the matter.
